Binsfeldius Cluster Project VMWare vSphere 6.0

Let’s try something new…

The Binsfeldius Cluster has had a good and stable run on it’s Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 foundation but now it’s time to start from scratch and build the 3-node-cluster on the latest VMWare technology.

This post originally started out as a vSphere 5.5 build however as time progressed, and I got distracted, let’s pick this up at the latest version ov VMWare.

I will be using the same host hardware apart from double the memory in the nodes. Of course, I will boot from the QNAP ISCSI boot LUNs (coincidentally also a new QNAP, the TVS-871)

The network will be somewhat different as I’ve changed my infrastructure quite a bit in the past year. The physical hosts are in a separate firewalled VLAN and the VM’s will be deployed in several isolated VLAN’s which have their own segregated (Internet) access.

As before, I’m writing this as I progress through the update of the three node cluster from design, configuration and operation of the cluster. So, the latest entry in the navigation is exactly where I am at.

The index below will allow you to travel the path as I experienced it

  1. Binsfeldius Cluster moving to VMWare vSphere 6.0
  2. The shopping list
  3. Good things come in threes
  4. Building a hardware node
  5. The network design
  6. Preparing a node
  7. Installing VMWare ESXi 6.0 to iSCSI Boot LUN
  8. The storage design
  9. First configuration steps on each node – using vSphere Client
  10. vCenter Appliance & Web Client
  11. Building the three nodes into one cluster
  12. Getting rid of minor post configuration issues
